The Dragon Boat Festival (May 5th of the lunar calendar, usually in June of the Gregorian calendar) is one of the four traditional festivals in China. It began in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period and has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is the first festival in China to be selected as a world intangible cultural heritage.

In the ancient Chinese country of Chu, there was a very smart and well-known minister and poet. His name is Qu Yuan.

But because of someone’s slanders, the King banished him to the very south of China --far away from his own country and close to the river Mi Luo Jiang.

Qu yuan was not happy being so far from his home country. So he committed suicide by drowning himself in the river Mi Luo Jiang.

But the people like Qu Yuan very much. So they sent out dragon boats to find his dead body soon-- but they didn’t find him.

So they made Zong Zi, so the fish would eat this instead of the dead body.
